Faith and Spiritual Formation

Rosary Prayer Group

Devotions and spiritual growth are an important part of our community. The Rosary Prayer Group is a great opportunity for spiritual growth and camaraderie among parishioners. There are a number of parishioners who gather on a daily basis before the daily Mass to pray for the needs of others through the intercession of Mary the Mother of God.

Devotions to the Divine Mercy

Devotions to the Divine Mercy are prayed each Tuesday evening after the evening Mass. Divine Mercy is a devotion to the merciful love of God and the desire to let that love  and mercy flow through one’s own heart towards those in need of it. The devotion is due to the apparitions of Jesus received by Saint Mary Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938), who is known as the  Apostle of Mercy.

Three main themes of the devotion are to ask for and obtain the mercy of God, to trust in  Christ’s abundant mercy, and finally to show mercy to others and act as a conduit for God’s mercy towards them. The devotion includes specific prayers such as the Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

This devotion is a source of consoloation to many and through the urging of St. Mary Faustina Kowalska, lead us to a deeper appreciation of God’s mercy.

Legion of Mary

The Legion of Mary is a world-wide apostolic organization of ordinary Catholic lay people – men, women and children – with over 3 million active members in almost every country of the world. They have been a part of Hamilton Diocese since 1935. Their purpose is to become better Catholics through prayer and active service to the Lord and His Church.

They take their inspriation from Mary the Mother of God, Mother of the Church and our Mother. In all that they do they try to imitate her; in humility, prayer, mortification, purity, patience, wisdom and above all faith and love for her Son, Jesus.  Spiritual works of mercy comproise their service. Legionaries seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit, in all their apostolic work. Their apostolic work is at the discretion of the spirtitual director, usually the parish priest.

This organization currently assists with organizaing monthly mass at our two Lifecare Centres. They pray the rosary with the residents and lead communion services in each Centre once per month. They also assist in bringing communion to parishioners who are in the area hospitals. They meet weekly on Tuesday evening and maintain a connection with the Legion on a Diocesan level as well.

Bible Study

We have ongoing scripture study sessions in the parish. Held on Saturday mornings, these sessions involve video presentations and group faith sharing. These sessions lasting for several weeks, depending on the series, have been very popular. The sessions help participants to come to know the scriptures within their historical context, help participants to see the scriptural basis of many of our Catholic beliefs and practices. Currently, the group is following A Biblical Walk with Mary, an eight week series. Another series will be offered in the new year. Please watch the bulletin and this website for details about the next program.
