Welcome to the Fall!

Lent

Welcome to the Fall Season and  Some Faith Growth and New Beginnings!

Students and staff have returned to our six parochial schools. Our Lady of the Assumption School rebuild is progressing nicely, as are plans for a new additional school in Binbrook.  We continue to watch these developments with joyful anticipation.

Sacramental  Certificates Available for Pickup from the Church

In case you missed it over the summer, First Communion and Confirmation Certificates from our celebrations earlier this year are available for pickup in the main entrance of the church. To save the cost of mailing, we encourage families to pick up these certificates. Certificates not picked up by the end of September will be available from the parish office.

Upcoming Parent Meetings for First Communion and Confirmation

All parents of children in Grade 2 and 7 within our schools will be receiving a letter from us soon (distributed through the students) to inform you about parent meetings for First Reconciliation and First Communion and Confirmation. Parents will have a choice of one of three dates and it is important that parents attend one of  these meetings as we will be handing out key information at these meetings and registration forms for the sacraments. As these celebrations are celebrations of the parish faith community, it is important that you connect with the parish for proper and accurate information about these important faith celebrations in the faith journey of your child.  All meetings are held in Our Lady of the Assumption Church and last approximately 45 minutes. These dates are as follows:

First Communion Parent Meetings

Confirmation Parent Meetings

Thursday, October 12, 2017 – 7:00 p.m.

Sunday, October 15, 2017 – 2:00 p.m.

Saturday, October 21 – 7:00 p.m.

Please note that registration for the celebration of these sacraments is crucial as parents must indicate to the parish their desire to have these children celebrate these sacraments.

Other Opportunities to Know and Love Your Faith

Scripture Study

We are offering a Bible Study on the Gospel of Matthew to begin September 16, Sessions are on Saturday mornings and are well worth the time spent. These sessions are enjoyable, life giving and informative. They also offer an opportunity to connect with our parish community and with people of incredible faith! See the blog for further information. Click on the title to read the full blog or click on this link: Matthew: The King and His Kingdom

Online Faith Formation

We are also investigating the use of a website called Formed. org, which is produced by the Augustine Faith  Institute. The site, which is touted as a faith Netflix, gives users access to faith based movies and programs that serve to help members know their faith on their own time. We will be using portions of these programs in our ongoing faith formation and offering subscriptions to parishioners who are interested. It is an amazing site and we hope it will help everyone in the parish come to know their faith better and to strengthen family life. For  more information about the site click this link: Formed

REBOOT!

Tickets are moving quickly for REBOOT!  This event will be taking place at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Stoney Creek on October  26, 2017. These sessions sell out in most of the venues in which they are offered. Those who attend report a new enthusiasm for their faith and a deeper desire to engage more fully in their faith.  We had a presentation in the Parish Hall recently and hope to offer an occasion to preview the event in October. Tickets are available from the Parish Office. They are $26.00 well spent! See the blog for further information. Click on the title to expand the content. RCIA

The Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults will begin on October 11. This faith formation process is designed primarily for those who are not baptized and wish to become fully initiated Catholic Christians. Those who are baptized in other Christian faiths who wish to complete their initiation into the Catholic faith can also apply to be part of this process.

Sessions are on Wednesday evenings from October to May. Initiation normally occurs at the Easter Vigil (the evening before Easter Sunday).

This is an opportunity for those interested in learning about the faith to receive a good understanding of the faith and gradually deepen their connection with the Church. Those participating may choose to complete their initiation, delay it or to make the decision not to be initiation. In other words, it is a process of inquiry.

For those who are already Catholic and want to update their knowledge of the faith, we encourage participation as sponsors for the candidates. You will learn a great deal and provide much needed support for those who are inquiring about the faith.

For further information about the RCIA and to apply, see the brochures at the entrances to the church, or speak to one of the priests.

Making Scheduling for Ministries Easier

One of the challenges in parishes is to schedule ministries. We are transitioning gradually this Fall to an online scheduling system for ministries that parishioners can access to schedule their service times. For those who are intimidated by technology, our office will assist and will provide copies of the schedules as usual.

This system, successfully used in several of our parishes, allows ministers to choose their times of service, to switch with others if they cannot make their commitment, among many other benefits. More information will follow, once the initial setup of the Ministries Scheduler Pro is completed. If you want a sense of how this process works, click here: Ministry Scheduler Pro

That’s all for now. Remember that growth in faith is fueled by the Eucharist!
